The coif – today also called fool’s cap – is a fashionable compantion throughout the middle ages. Even in the Renaissance and later it is still worn. It is always made from white linen and was worn by men and children of all classes.
The coif protects the head and hair from dirt and the sun, additionally it tames the hair. It was worn on its own or as a base for other hats and headdresses. It is very comfortable and easy to put on. Thus it is suitable for many medieval portrayals, for simple folk or for rich people. It is convenient for newcomers to the reenactment and living history scene and also interesting for veteran reenactors.
