Description
This short-sleeved medieval tunic or cotta is made from unbleached linen and is only hip-length. This makes it uniquely suited for summer dress and to wear with pants or hose. Usually it is worn as underwear with a cotta made from wool with the same cut. Wool and linen have excellent temperature regulation when worn together (warm in winter, cool in summer). But if it is very arm or you habe to work hard it is possible to wear just the linen tunic.
The cut of the tunic is based on the finds in Haithabu (or Hedeby) in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The Haithabu cotta consists of front and back panels with middle and side gussets in the a little over knee-length skirt part. In this case without the gussets and only hip-length. The sleeves are made from one piece with a rounded sleeve head and no underarm gusset. This sleeve form is specific to the finds in Haithabu in early medieval times, but spread everywhere in in the high and late medieval periods.
The visible seams are hand stitched with beige coloured linen thread. The invisible seams are machine sewn.
On request all seams can be done by hand or machine.
